First Candle’s 2009 Stillbirth, SIDS & SUID Research & Advocacy Symposium January 28th, 2009

March 23 – 25, 2009

Every year in the United States, 26,000 families are devastated by stillbirth. In addition, there are 4,500 sudden, unexpected infant deaths (SUID), including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Despite progress at reducing SIDS rates during the past decade, SIDS remains the leading cause of death for infants one month to one year of age.

In order to address these alarming statistics, First Candle is bringing together leading researchers, bereaved family members, health professionals and others to explore current research efforts and strategies for saving infant lives. The symposium will conclude with a “Day on the Hill,” where participants will visit with Congressional leaders to encourage our nation’s lawmakers to support critical legislation and programming that will help us reach our goal of a future where all babies survive and thrive.

There is no charge for the Symposium, but space is limited! A $25 registration fee will hold your spot and be used to offset food and beverage expenses at the Symposium. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on the 24th and breakfast on the 25th is included.

If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Graham at 1-800-221-7437 or symposium@firstcandle.org.

Kicks Count! Jeff Reed of the Super Bowl-Champion Pittsburgh Steelers Puts it in Football Terms January 25th, 2009

Jeff Reed, kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kirk Ferentz, head coach of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes lend their support, along with Iowa’s First Lady Mari Culver, Dr. Daniel Edelstone of University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women’s Hospital and Dr. Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew of University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Counting your baby’s kicks during your last trimester is a simple, free and effective way to help monitor your baby’s health. Experts now agree that it may also help reduce the risk of stillbirth.
