Please read the press release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for specific details about the type of cribs being recalled and the dangers they pose. If you are currently using one of these cribs it is important that you stop using it immediately and wait to receive your free repair kit to fix the problem and ensure the crib’s safety. In the meantime, please use the following information to make sure that your baby has a safe place to sleep.
Every year thousands of babies die because they are put to sleep in unsafe places. This far exceeds the very small number of deaths that have occurred as a result of this faulty hardware. It is critical for parents to know that despite these reports, the safest place for babies to sleep is in a crib that meets current safety standards. More detailed information on safety guidelines for cribs can be found at www.jpma.org.
The mattress should be firm, covered with only a tight fitting crib sheet and fit snuggly in the crib. There should be nothing soft, fluffy or loose in the sleep area – this includes blankets, quilts, pillows soft or pillow like bumpers, stuffed animals or other soft objects. Play yards are also a safe choice. Bassinets and cradles are good choices for younger babies. Be sure to follow all size and weight restrictions for the product you choose and do not add any extra padding or soft bedding to the sleep space.
Adult beds are not safe for sleeping babies and falling asleep with a baby on a sofa or in an armchair is extremely dangerous! Babies need to have their own, separate sleep space to protect them from SIDS, suffocation and accidents during sleep. Placing the baby’s separate safe sleep space near where you sleep (room sharing) will help keep your baby safe and reduce the risk of SIDS.
