First Candle Responds to Recent Drop Side Crib Recalls June 25th, 2010

Offers support and resources to concerned parents and caregivers

Despite recent voluntary recalls of drop side cribs, First Candle reminds parents and caregivers that research and statistics continue to show that a crib that meets current safety standards, is properly assembled and has no worn or defective parts is still the safest place for your baby to sleep.

First Candle is available to answer your questions and respond to your concerns toll-free at 1-800-221-7437.

We offer the following information and resources to help guide you in ensuring your baby has a safe place to sleep at naptime and nighttime:

  • For the most accurate, up-to-date information on the importance of safe sleep in protecting your baby from SIDS, suffocation and accidents during sleep, visit www.firstcandle.org
  • In the most recent voluntary recall issued by the CPSC, seven manufacturers are offering a free kit to immobilize drop side cribs for parents and caregivers who are concerned (see CPSC Press Release and JPMA Statement below).  If your crib is included, we urge you to contact the manufacturer to receive your free immobilization kit.
  • Even if your crib is not part of the recall, take a minute to inspect your crib for any loose, worn or missing hardware. Also refer to your manufacturer’s instructions to double check that your crib is assembled properly.
  • If your crib is involved in this recall, or you are concerned about the safety of your crib for any reason, we urge you to take care in selecting a safe alternative sleep space for your baby until you are able to obtain the free immobilization kit, replacement hardware or purchase a new crib.
  • Consider these safe alternatives: portable play yard style cribs (check for size and weight limitations) and bassinets for babies who are less than 6 months old or are not yet able to push up or roll over.
  • Keep in mind that as many as 4,000 babies die every year as a result of being placed to sleep in unsafe places (such as adult beds, sofas and cluttered cribs), compared to the small number of babies who are injured or die from defective cribs.
  • Remember that adult beds are not safe for sleeping babies and never place your baby to sleep on any soft surface such as a sofa, chair, pillow, cushion or quilt.
  • If you are considering purchasing a new crib, consider purchasing a crib without a drop side.
