2009 Day on the Hill

day-on-the-hillDuring the past 40 years, First Candle’s grass roots advocacy efforts have seen tremendous success in increasing awareness, support and funding for issues relating to infant health and survival. With the help of thousands of volunteers, we have cultivated a strong interest in SIDS and stillbirth issues among U.S. Congressional members as well as state legislators.

The 2009 Day on the Hill was no exception. More than 70 individuals descended upon Capitol Hill to advocate and garner support for pending House and Senate bills that address issues related to Stillbirth, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) and Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC).

The impact of these more than 250 congressional visits was significant. Members of the Congressional offices were moved by the stories of parents who have lost babies and impressed by the passion of the professionals who work in this field. We are confident that these visits will help ensure the passage of House Bill 3212 and Senate Bill 1445. To learn more about these bills, visit our Federal Legislation section.
