Dr. Marian Sokol Presides Over the NASDAQ Opening Bell

Amid the (rainy) hustle and bustle of New York City’s Times Square, the First Candle logo glowed brightly on the NASDAQ marquee. Presiding over the opening bell is a privilege usually reserved for publicly traded companies. But on this day, the NASDAQ open featured First Candle as a leader in the fight against our nation’s high rates of infant mortality. The award ceremony and presentation by First Candle President, Marian Sokol, was carried live in the United States by CNBC and Bloomberg, as well as internationally by CNBC India, KTVU, NDTV (New Delhi), Report on Business (Canada), New Tang Dynasty TV, and Bloomberg Brazil.

“It was such an honor and privilege to be afforded this opportunity,” said Executive Director Deborah Boyd. “The exposure will no doubt go a long way to support our important mission of saving babies’ lives.” Joining Sokol and Boyd at the podium was Director of Public Affairs, Laura Reno, and board member Greg Reid, Senior Vice President of YRC Worldwide, Inc.

First Candle was in New York City to launch Bedtime Basics, a national campaign created to prevent infant deaths caused by unsafe sleep practices. It is the goal of the campaign to ensure that every parent is aware of, and prepared to adopt, lifesaving safe sleep practices before leaving the hospital, with their baby and to ensure that every child has access to a safe crib, especially if the family can’t afford one. The private media symposium was held at the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Plaza – thanks to the generous support of premiere sponsor, Simplicity for Children.
