Can Stillbirth be Prevented?
At this time, stillbirth cannot always be predicted or prevented. However, there are helpful strategies for pregnant women to follow to help reduce the risk of stillbirth:
- Do not smoke, drink alcohol or use street drugs. Prescription, over the counter and herbal medications should be discussed with your doctor.
- Report any vaginal bleeding, leakage or sharp pain.
- Begin to monitor your baby’s activity at around 28 weeks, earlier for high-risk pregnancies. See kick counting below.
- Women who have experienced a previous stillbirth, women with high-risk pregnancies and obese women should be monitored very closely during pregnancy.
- If you are past your due date, discuss your options with your doctor. Pregnancies longer than 42 weeks may be at increased risk for stillbirth.
- Do not hesitate to request a second or third opinion anytime during your pregnancy to put your mind at ease.
Kick counting is now recognized as the first strategy to help reduce the risk of stillbirth. Learn how you can help protect your unborn baby at Kicks Count.
