New & Expectant Parents
Congratulations! You’ve just found out you’re pregnant or you're caring for a new baby. In
addition to caring for yourself and your unborn baby, there
is much to learn about providing your baby the best possible
chance to survive and thrive once he or she is born.
For some of the more than four million
American families delivering a baby this year, the
information they receive on reducing the risk of sudden
infant deaths may mean the difference between life and death
for their babies. While there is still much to learn, recent advances in medical
research have allowed experts to develop recommendations to
reduce the risk of stillbirth, SIDS and accidental infant deaths -- proactive steps that parents
and caregivers can take to help their baby survive and
thrive.
While this is great news, it has required an
about-face in childcare practices – not an easy task. With
so many people caring for the more than 4 million babies
born in the United States each year, it is critical that
these life-saving messages reach all communities and all
populations.
First
Candle is here to offer information, materials
and advice as you prepare for the birth of your baby or care for a baby through the first year of life. Please share this information with all those
caring for babies in your community.
Working together we
can continue to have a significant impact on our country’s
high rates of infant mortality . . . in the belief that
every baby should live.
