The train-the-trainer style curriculum is comprehensive and covers understanding SIDS risk factors, Caring for our Children standards, current research, safe sleep environment, handling a medical emergency, training preparation, responding to an unresponsive infant, bereavement, outreach, support and professional development.
The trainings incorporate role playing to increase the efficacy of the child care provider’s communication skills and includes curricula, policies and guidelines, and additional resources for trainers about risk reduction and bereavement support.
Current efforts are focused on training child care trainers and providing technical assistance to local and regional training programs. Many large child care programs have designated trainers who train center staff on a variety of topics. Home-based center providers, kin care providers and informal childcare providers might be members of local or regional associations that have trainers who provide continuing education and contact hours.
