Over the course of the past three decades, First Candle has funded cutting-edge research projects at medical institutions throughout
the United States.
In addition, we continue to fund scientifically-based research and we are initiating pilot projects in applied and qualitative research. One such collaborative research project is being piloted with Baltimore Maryland’s Mercy Hospital physicians and public health researchers to evaluate provider knowledge and practice of kick counting to help reduce the risk of late-term stillbirth on a local and national level. In conjunction with the University of Maryland’s Center for Infant Loss, we are currently conducting research on effective bereavement interventions. We are also utilizing surveys to collect data and information from our constituency to help inform our programs and services.
As one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to safe pregnancies and the survival of babies through the first years of life, First Candle has teamed with The Lancet medical journal to disseminate information regarding the launch of its Stillbirth Series. The Series is designed to raise awareness of stillbirth and the need to address this issue globally. This Series also includes a global call for action, key findings, and recommendations.

Furthering research is often the primary focus for families when a baby has died. The sudden, unexpected nature of the death leaves families with more questions than answers when it comes to understanding why their baby died.
