During the course of the past four decades, First Candle has funded cutting-edge research projects at medical institutions throughout the United States. We are also initiating pilot projects in applied and qualitative research. Under the guidance of our expert panel of Medical Directors, we continue to provide a single, focused outlet for individuals and organizations interested in supporting research to further our understanding of stillbirth, SIDS and other causes of sudden, unexpected infant deaths (SUID).
Every year in the United States nearly 26,000 babies die before taking their first breath. This number is equal to the number of post-neonatal deaths each year. Much more research is needed to explore the many different potential causes of stillbirth, from infection and lifestyle issues to placenta and cord issues. First Candle is committed to advocating for and soliciting much-needed funding for stillbirth research to further our understanding of the causes of stillbirth and develop preventive strategies for the future.
SIDS/SUID research has yielded significant breakthroughs in recent years. But our work is not done; SIDS remains the leading cause of death for babies one month to one year of age and as many as 4,000 sudden, unexpected infant deaths occur each year. First Candle is committed to advocating for and soliciting much needed funding for SIDS/SUID research to further our understanding of the causes and develop further preventive strategies for the future.
Most parents who experience the death of a baby describe the pain that follows as the most intense they have ever experienced. Many parents wonder if they will be able to tolerate the pain, survive it, and be able to feel that life has meaning again. First Candle is committed to supporting important research and pilot programs that can shed light on the largely understudied areas of parental and children’s grief.
