On March 14, 2005, Laura and Steve Becton welcomed another baby boy, Luke Edward, into their family. Everyone, especially grandparents, were thrilled with another baby boy! This chubby baby arrived with a full head of strawberry blond hair and bright blue eyes. His 2-year-old brother, Ryan, called him "gukey" and liked to play with his feet. Over the next four months Luke grew into a smiley, thumb sucking, bubbly boy. He loved to sit in his bouncy chair and watch the world around him. He would move his arms and loved to flash his ever-present smile. Luke also loved music and walks around the West Village with his parents, chatting all the way!
On July 18, 2005, a mere four months and four days later, Luke spent the morning at the park with his brother. He had a bottle and played with his brother before his nap. Luke was put down for his afternoon nap and didn't wake up.
In the two and a half years since this tragedy, the Becton family has tried to cope with the loss of their son. They have also had to deal with the realization that Luke will not grow up sharing his life with his brother Ryan and the Becton's third child, Aidan. Since Luke's death, Laura and Steve have met many other families who also lost their baby suddenly, with no explanation. One of the common threads that binds these families is the immense grief that accompanies such a tragedy. Laura and Steve are committed to helping families with the bereavement support they need to cope with such a loss. The ultimate goal for Laura and Steve though is putting an end to the mystery that is SIDS. While progress is being made in SIDS research, there is still very little that is known about this syndrome.
Over the last two and a half years, Laura and Steve have received amazing support from family, friends, and medical professionals. They want to raise money so all families can receive this extremely important support.
